Spent an hour this morning speaking with journalist Patrick Cox - he's based in Boston USA and he's putting together a discussion on Size Acceptance.......sometimes it's difficult talking to listeners based in America - I need to be sure I'm not using too many British coloquialisms - so I hope they "get my drift"!
He seemed very interested in the "new black" element of the campaign and suggested, as many do, that we are aligning our discussions to the problems experienced by people of colour - well of course not. We are, quite simply, not born fat - however I do believe that there are comparisons to be drawn - how is it acceptable to be physically and verbally rude to a fat person, but not physically or verbally rude to a person of colour? That's just for starters......

Yes Vicky, I have to say I am disgusted that the only thing that is discriminatory these days that is allowed, completely legal, and yet no different to other forms of ISMS is sizism!
People want to try remembering that the overweight are human too, and that their disparaging remarks will never force someone into dealing with their weight problem, it is more than likely it will send them into depression, which is when comfort eating can become an issue!
