For anyone who is brave enough (I understand some are not), and for those who are physically able, I would recommend belly dancing as a fun way of getting/keeping fit.
Being overweight is actually an advantage for most of the dancing (ok big bewbies may get in the way occasionally) but on the whole, it's better to be curvy and stick thin, and I understand that this is suitable for most ages and abilities.
This exercise is gentle, yet rigorous, it tones the body well and is far more fun than those boring gyms. Ladies, you may even find that you get a bit of 'attention' from your partner, if you get my drift.
If you don't fancy taking lessons in public, there are belly dancing dvds and cds to be found (ebay is prob cheapest) and also there are books in waterstones and even sites online with guidance.
As with all exercise, it's good to discuss with your doc 1st.
